Volume Converter

Volume conversion is needed in cooking (cups to mL), chemistry (liters to cubic centimeters), construction (cubic yards to cubic meters), and shipping (cubic feet for freight). Our converter covers liquid volume units (gallons, quarts, liters) and geometric volume units (cubic meters, cubic feet, cubic inches), clearly distinguishing the two systems.

About the Volume Converter

Volume conversion is needed in cooking (cups to mL), chemistry (liters to cubic centimeters), construction (cubic yards to cubic meters), and shipping (cubic feet for freight). Our converter covers liquid volume units (gallons, quarts, liters) and geometric volume units (cubic meters, cubic feet, cubic inches), clearly distinguishing the two systems.

How to use it

  1. Enter a value and select the unit.
  2. See conversions across all common liquid and volume units.
  3. Switch between US customary (fl oz, cups, gallons), metric (mL, liters), and cubic units.
  4. Use the cooking mode for tablespoons, teaspoons, and cooking-specific measures.

Formula & methodology

1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fl oz. 1 liter = 1,000 mL = 1,000 cm³ = 0.001 m³. 1 cubic foot = 28.3168 liters = 7.481 US gallons. 1 cubic inch = 16.387 mL. 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 liters (different from US gallon!).

Common use cases

  • Cooking: converting between US and metric recipe measurements
  • Aquarium sizing: converting gallons to liters for international equipment
  • Fuel: MPG calculations using gallons vs liters per 100km
  • Concrete and bulk materials: cubic yards to cubic meters
  • Medical: mL to fl oz for infant feeding or medication instructions

Frequently asked questions

No — and the difference is significant. US gallon = 3.785 liters. UK (imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters. The UK gallon is about 20% larger. This matters for: fuel consumption (US cars rate MPG in US gallons; UK cars in imperial MPG — a UK "40 MPG" is ~48 US MPG), alcohol quantities, and any recipe from a different country.
16 US cups = 1 US gallon. The hierarchy: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 32 gill = 128 fl oz. A helpful mnemonic: Gallon Queen Proudly Carries (Gallons, Quarts, Pints, Cups). This is a US customary system — metric uses only liters and mL, which is simpler.
