About the Area Converter

Area conversions are needed in real estate (square feet to square meters), agriculture (acres to hectares), and construction (square yards to square meters). Our converter covers all common area units from square millimeters to square miles, with a visual size reference comparing units to familiar objects.

How to use it

  1. Enter a value and select the area unit.
  2. See conversions across all common area units instantly.
  3. Use the reference panel to understand scale: 1 acre = 0.4 football fields.
  4. Toggle between metric (m², km², ha) and imperial (sq ft, acres, sq miles).

Formula & methodology

1 sq meter = 10.764 sq feet. 1 acre = 43,560 sq feet = 4,047 m² = 0.4047 hectares. 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres. 1 sq mile = 640 acres = 2.59 km². 1 sq km = 100 hectares = 247.1 acres. 1 sq foot = 144 sq inches = 0.0929 m².

Common use cases

  • Real estate: converting property listings between sq ft (US) and m² (international)
  • Agriculture: farmland in acres (US) vs hectares (Europe)
  • Urban planning: comparing city sizes in km² or sq miles
  • Flooring/painting: calculating sq ft of materials needed
  • GIS/mapping: working with spatial data in different unit systems

Frequently asked questions

One acre = 43,560 sq ft = roughly 208.7 × 208.7 feet (a square about 2/3 of a football field on a side). An American football field (including end zones) is about 1.32 acres. A standard city block in Manhattan is about 5 acres. The average US single-family home lot is 0.25–0.5 acres.
1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres. The hectare is the metric standard for large land areas (farmland, forests). The acre is the US and UK traditional unit. In practice: 1 hectare ≈ 2½ acres. European real estate listings use hectares and m²; US listings use acres and sq ft.
