Formule et méthodologie

Format characteristics: JPG/JPEG — lossy compression, no transparency, best for photos. PNG — lossless, supports transparency, best for graphics and logos. WebP — modern format, lossy or lossless, ~30% smaller than JPG at same quality. AVIF — next-gen, ~50% smaller than JPG, excellent quality. GIF — 256 colors max, supports animation. TIFF — lossless, large files, professional print. Quality setting (JPG): 80-85 is visually indistinguishable from 100 at half the size.

Cas d'usage courants

  • Converting JPG photos to WebP for faster website loading
  • Converting BMP screenshots to PNG for smaller file size
  • Converting images to AVIF for modern browsers and CDN optimization
  • Converting GIF animations to WebP for better quality and smaller size

Questions fréquentes

WebP is the current best-practice format for most web images — ~30% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality, supports transparency like PNG, and has 95%+ browser support. AVIF is even better but has slightly lower compatibility. For maximum compatibility, use JPG for photos and PNG for graphics with transparency, and offer WebP as a modern alternative using the HTML picture element with JPG/PNG fallback. Avoid BMP, TIFF, and unoptimized PNG for web use.
No — once image data is lost through JPG compression, it cannot be recovered by converting to a lossless format. Converting JPG to PNG produces a lossless PNG of the already-compressed JPG data. It prevents further quality loss from re-saving as JPG, but does not restore the original quality. If you have a PNG original, keep it. Only convert to JPG when you are producing a final output, not an intermediate that will be re-edited.
