About the Weight & Mass Converter

Weight and mass conversions are needed in cooking (grams to ounces), shipping (kilograms to pounds), scientific work (milligrams and micrograms), and international commerce. Our converter covers all common units from micrograms to metric tons, with a technical note on the distinction between mass (kg) and weight (newtons).

How to use it

  1. Enter a value and select the unit: micrograms, milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons, ounces, pounds, stone, short tons, long tons.
  2. See instant conversions across all units.
  3. Use the cooking mode for recipe scaling (cups to grams for common ingredients).

Formula & methodology

Base unit: kilogram (SI). 1 kg = 1,000 g = 1,000,000 mg. 1 pound = 453.592 g = 16 oz. 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.350 kg. 1 metric ton = 1,000 kg. 1 short ton (US) = 2,000 lbs = 907.185 kg. 1 long ton (UK) = 2,240 lbs = 1,016.047 kg. Weight (force) in newtons: W = m × g (g = 9.80665 m/s²).

Common use cases

  • Cooking: converting international recipe ingredients (grams to oz)
  • Shipping: package weight for carrier rate calculation
  • Pharmacy: medication dosing in milligrams and micrograms
  • Fitness: tracking body weight across US pounds vs UK stone
  • Import/export: commodity weights in metric tons vs short tons

Frequently asked questions

Mass (kg) is the amount of matter in an object — constant regardless of gravity. Weight (newtons) is the gravitational force on that mass: W = mg. On the Moon (g = 1.62 m/s²), you'd weigh 1/6 as much but your mass is unchanged. In everyday usage, "weight" is used loosely to mean mass in kilograms or pounds.
One stone = 14 pounds. The stone is a British unit of body weight still widely used in the UK and Ireland — a person weighing 175 lbs would say they are "12 stone 7 pounds" (12×14 + 7 = 175). It is not used in the US and not part of the official metric or US customary systems.
