About the Tip and Bill Split Calculator

The Tip and Bill Split Calculator makes splitting restaurant bills and calculating tips effortless. Perfect for group dinners, business lunches, or any shared expense where everyone needs a fair and clear breakdown.

How to use it

  1. Enter the total bill amount before tip.
  2. Select or type your desired tip percentage (15%, 18%, 20%, or custom).
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. Read each person share including tip and the total tip amount.

Formula & methodology

Tip amount = bill * (tip% / 100). Total with tip = bill + tip amount. Per person = total with tip / number of people. Tip on pre-tax: tip = pre-tax subtotal * rate. Split unevenly: each person tip = their subtotal * rate.

Common use cases

  • Splitting dinner bills among friends fairly
  • Calculating server tip at restaurants
  • Business meal expense reporting with accurate tip tracking
  • Group travel: splitting shared meal costs
  • Teaching tipping etiquette and math to younger diners

Frequently asked questions

In the US, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically the traditional standard, but most people tip on the total including tax because it is simpler. The difference is small — on an $80 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on pre-tax vs post-tax is about a $1.28 difference. Either is acceptable.
In the US: 15% is considered adequate, 18% is average, 20% is good service, 25%+ is excellent. For takeout, 10% is common. For delivery, 15-20% on the pre-delivery subtotal. Internationally, customs vary widely — in Japan tipping can be considered rude; in Europe 5-10% is typical.
