Tip Calculator

Calculating a tip on your phone is a familiar restaurant ritual, but if you split a bill across 4 people and the math goes wrong, someone always ends up short. Our tip calculator handles the standard "what is 18%/20%/22% on this bill", splits the result among any number of diners, and even handles the case where you want a round per-person total. Built for restaurants, taxis, bars, hotel housekeeping and any service where tipping is customary.

How Much Should You Tip in 2025?

Tipping norms have shifted significantly in recent years. In 2025, the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service ranges from 18% to 22%, with 20% widely considered the baseline for good service. For exceptional service, 25% or more is increasingly common.

For takeout orders, a tip of 10%–15% has become customary, though it remains optional. Delivery drivers typically receive 15%–20% of the order total, with a minimum of $3–$5 for smaller orders.

In service industries like hair salons, spa treatments, and hotel housekeeping, 15%–20% remains the norm. Always tip on the pre-tax amount if you want to follow the traditional approach, though many prefer to tip on the full total as a gesture of generosity.

About the Tip Calculator

Calculating a tip on your phone is a familiar restaurant ritual, but if you split a bill across 4 people and the math goes wrong, someone always ends up short. Our tip calculator handles the standard "what is 18%/20%/22% on this bill", splits the result among any number of diners, and even handles the case where you want a round per-person total. Built for restaurants, taxis, bars, hotel housekeeping and any service where tipping is customary.

How to use it

  1. Enter the pre-tip bill total.
  2. Pick a tip percentage (15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, or custom).
  3. Set the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. See per-person totals, tip amount and grand total.
  5. Use "round up" mode if you want a clean dollar amount per person.

Formula & methodology

Tip = Bill × (Tip % / 100). Per person = (Bill + Tip) / Number of people.

Common use cases

  • Splitting a restaurant bill fairly among a group
  • Tipping taxi or rideshare drivers
  • Tipping at hotels (housekeeping, bell service)
  • Calculating a service tip on a salon visit
  • Quickly checking if a service charge is already included

Frequently asked questions

Restaurants: 18–22% on the pre-tax total for sit-down service, 10–15% for counter service. Bars: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Taxi: 10–15%. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night.
Either is acceptable. Pre-tax is technically "correct" (you are tipping for service, not paying tax on tax) but most people just tip on the total because it is faster. The difference is small.
In Europe, a service charge usually covers the tip. In the US, "service charge" sometimes goes to the restaurant rather than the server — read the menu and ask if unsure.
